Twelve Feet of Crystal Over a Marble Staircase

Walk into The Charleston Place and the first thing that registers is scale: an Italian marble lobby that opens upward into a 12-foot crystal chandelier, reached by the hotel's signature Open Arm staircase. It is a deliberately grand entrance for a deliberately grand hotel, built in 1986 to anchor Meeting Street but designed to read as though it had always been part of Charleston's Georgian streetscape. The 434 rooms spread across several wings, which means the hotel can hold a wedding, a conference, and a quiet weekend stay simultaneously without any of them crossing paths. It's the closest thing Charleston's Historic District has to a grand European hotel, transplanted a few degrees south.

Why It Works

We chose this hotel because it delivers the full set of big-hotel amenities that boutique Charleston properties simply can't: a genuine spa with sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi; a salt-water pool under a retractable roof that runs through winter; and Charleston Grill, a restaurant serious enough to anchor a destination dinner on its own. The Clocktower Terrace rooftop adds a second scene above the pool, for guests who want a cocktail with a view rather than a swim. At 434 rooms, it has the infrastructure of a resort with the address of a boutique hotel — two blocks from King Street.

Why This Location

205 Meeting Street puts the hotel at the center of Charleston's Historic District, two blocks from King Street's shopping corridor and a short walk from the City Market, Rainbow Row, and the Battery. It's less a neighborhood choice than a hub choice: nearly every landmark worth walking to in downtown Charleston sits within fifteen minutes on foot, and the hotel's own valet and concierge desk are built around guests who want to explore rather than drive. Few addresses in the district offer this much within walking distance without sacrificing the quiet of a residential block at night.

A Spa and Pool Built for Year-Round Charleston

Most Charleston hotels treat the pool as an afterthought; The Charleston Place built its pool to work through all four seasons. The salt-water pool sits under a retractable roof, open to the sky on warm days and closed off when Charleston's humidity or winter chill makes an outdoor swim impractical. The adjoining spa runs a full menu of treatments alongside a sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi, with a fitness center next door for guests keeping to a routine. It is the rare downtown hotel built to function as a wellness stop, not just a bed for the night.

Charleston Grill's Jazz and Low Country Menu

Charleston Grill carries the hotel's old-world instincts into dinner: dark wood paneling, arched alcoves, and live jazz most nights of the week. Chef Michelle Weaver's menu is organized into four registers — Pure, Lush, Southern, and Cosmopolitan — which lets a table split between a Low Country shrimp-and-grits dish and something closer to contemporary French without feeling like two different restaurants. It's a destination in its own right for Charleston diners who aren't staying at the hotel, which says as much about the kitchen as any review could.

Before You Book

Book Charleston Grill ahead on weekends, since it draws a local crowd as much as a hotel one. The Clocktower Terrace rooftop runs seasonally and is worth timing for sunset, before the dinner crowd arrives. Valet parking is the simplest way in and out of the Historic District, where street parking is scarce; once settled, King Street's shops and the City Market are both an easy walk. The hotel accepts pets, which is unusual for a property this formal, so travelling with a dog is one more reason this address works better than most.
